Before You Begin

The same movement can meet different needs.

And different movements can meet the same need.

Instead of asking,

"How do I stop this movement?"

try asking,

"What might this movement be helping my child's body do?"

Start with the first table if you've noticed a specific movement.

Use the second table if you know what your child needs but aren't sure what movement to try.

If toe walking is new, sudden, or constant rather than occasional, it's worth mentioning to a pediatrician or PT — it can also have a physical cause unrelated to sensory seeking.

Movement isn't random — the best clue is often what changes afterward.
