[name], did you ever think of the role ears might play in sleep? Other than those very painful and unwanted ear infections that seem to make a grand entrance only at night?
Ears may not be the first body part that comes to mind when thinking about sleep, but they can play a role in promoting relaxation which supports vagus nerve activation. Today, we'll explore the significance of ear pulls to release tension physical tension.
The Science Behind Ear-Related Relaxation:
You might wonder how gentle ear pulls can have an impact on relaxation and sleep. The science behind it highlights the interconnectedness of the body's nervous system:
Vagus Nerve Connection: The ears are home to several reflex points that are directly connected to the vagus nerve. When you engage with these reflex points through gentle ear pulls, you stimulate the vagus nerve, promoting relaxation.
Tension Release: Tension can accumulate in the muscles around the ears and jaw, particularly if your child tends to clench their jaw or experience stress during the day. Gentle ear pulls can help release this tension, allowing the body to relax more fully.
Starting at the ear lobe, slowly and gently pull on both ears, hold for a few seconds, then gently release.
Move farther up the ear’s edge and repeat the gentle pull-hold-release cycle.
Continue to do this around the entire ear, which should take about a minute total.
This could follow a pull out (and inhale), hold the ear there (hold the breath), and slowly release the ear (while slowly exhaling. For relaxation, the exhale needs to be as long as or longer than the inhale). The breath should only be added once the ear-pulls are routine.
